How to Choose a Cat Water Fountain
A cat water fountain is difficult to choose well from appearance alone. Two models that look similar can feel very different in everyday use: 1 L versus 3.2 L capacity, ceramic versus stainless steel, a subtle flow versus a tap-style stream, or a pump that is more noticeable in a quiet room.
To compare fountains without getting lost in the options, look at the criteria in this order: material, capacity, flow type, noise, maintenance and placement.
1. Ceramic or stainless steel: start with the material
The material influences weight, appearance and how the fountain feels to clean and handle.
Ceramic: stable and discreet in the home
Ceramic has a reassuring weight and gives the fountain the feel of tableware or a home object. Its smooth glazed surface is straightforward to clean when maintained regularly.
Bekk is the most minimal ceramic model in our selection: 1 L, 15 × 15 × 11 cm and a pump rated at around 20 dB. Kilde has a softer pebble-shaped silhouette in 1 or 1.5 L, while Skum adds pastel colour options in a 1 L format.
Stainless steel: durable and easy to live with
304 stainless steel is a practical choice if durability and straightforward cleaning are priorities. It has a more technical appearance than ceramic but works naturally in many contemporary kitchens.

2. Choose capacity around your refill routine
A larger reservoir is not automatically better. It takes up more space and still needs its water refreshed and the reservoir cleaned. A smaller fountain is discreet but may require more frequent attention.
- 1 L: Bekk and Skum, for a compact format if regular topping-up is not an issue.
- 1 to 1.5 L: Kilde, with two capacities while remaining compact.
- 2 L: Regn, a middle-ground option with a visible level indicator.
- 2.5 L: Klar, for a larger reserve without moving to the biggest format.
- 3.2 L: Ren, the largest capacity in our current selection.
If several cats use the same fountain, a larger capacity can be more convenient. Whatever the size, check the water level regularly: capacity reduces refills but does not remove the need to monitor and refresh the water.
3. Match the flow type to your cat's habits
Water movement differs significantly between fountains, and it is often the feature your cat notices first.
- Multiple streams: Klar produces several small flower-style streams visible from different angles.
- Tap-style flow: Ren uses a gooseneck spout and may appeal to cats that already investigate running taps.
- Waterfall flow: Regn runs water over an inclined surface in a continuous visible flow.
- Decorative waterfall: Foss and Elv are designed more like small indoor fountains, with tiered flow and an integrated planter.
There is no universally best flow. Use your cat's existing behaviour around water as a clue.
4. Noise matters most in the room where it will live
A pump that disappears into normal kitchen noise can be more noticeable in a quiet bedroom or office. If the fountain will sit beside a desk, sofa or sleeping area, compare the manufacturer's stated noise figure where one is available.
These figures are useful for comparison, but actual sound can also depend on water level, the surface beneath the fountain and how clean the pump is. Vibration transmitted through hollow furniture can sometimes be more noticeable than the pump itself.
5. Check maintenance before falling for the design
A fountain is in constant contact with water. Even the best-looking model becomes inconvenient if routine cleaning is unnecessarily awkward.
Before choosing, check three points:
- how easily you can reach and rinse the reservoir;
- whether the pump and filter can be removed without specialist tools;
- whether suitable replacement filters or consumables are readily available.
Filtered fountains still require regular cleaning, including around the pump. The filter can catch some impurities but never replaces refreshing the water and washing the parts that come into contact with it.
6. Choose for the room as well as the cat
The drinking station remains visible every day, so it is reasonable to treat the fountain as a small home object as well as pet equipment.
- For a light, minimal kitchen: Bekk or Kilde in cream ceramic.
- For a pared-back, more technical finish: Klar or Regn in stainless steel.
- For a tap-inspired look: Ren with its gooseneck spout and copper-toned detail.
