What Cat Tree Is Best for a Maine Coon or Large Cat?

An adult Maine Coon can weigh around 6 to 10 kg, and Norwegian Forest Cats and Ragdolls can also be substantial. At this size, a cat tree designed around smaller cats may feel cramped or move too much when your cat jumps onto it.

For a large cat, the useful comparison is not simply “XL” in the product name. Look at the actual weight of the structure, post diameter, platform dimensions and footprint.

What changes when your cat is larger?

A cat landing on an upper platform creates more than a static downward load: the structure also has to manage sideways movement. That is why a tree can feel stable while empty but move noticeably when a heavier cat jumps onto it.

Three practical consequences follow:

• A very lightweight structure is more likely to move during active use.
• A narrow platform may not give a long-bodied cat enough room to lie comfortably.
• Thicker, well-secured posts generally provide greater rigidity on taller structures.

Four specifications worth checking

1. Total structure weight

Weight is a useful comparison point because, all else being equal, a heavier base and structure tend to resist movement better. For a large or active cat, we favour models with a substantial overall build rather than relying on height alone.

Rot weighs approximately 22 kg, Gran around 20 kg and Asp 16.5 kg. Lighter models can still work well, but they are generally better suited to cats of a more standard build.

2. Post diameter

On tall cat trees, thicker posts can contribute to a more rigid structure and also provide a broader scratching surface. Rot uses 11 cm posts; Asp and Strand use 10 cm posts; Gran and Kaktus use 8 cm posts. We list this specification on the relevant product pages.

3. Platform and base width

A platform needs enough usable area for the cat to settle comfortably, while a wider base helps manage movement higher up the structure. Rot uses a 60 × 56 cm footprint, Gran 50 × 60 cm and Asp 55 × 45 cm.

4. Recommended number and size of cats

A model designed for several cats is often built around a higher combined load and more usable resting space. Treat this as one indicator alongside the actual dimensions rather than as a substitute for measuring your own cat.

Models that may be better suited to smaller cats

Not every model in our collection is intended for a large breed, and the product pages make those limits clear.

Lönn, for example, is recommended for a cat up to 4.5 kg. Lund uses 6.8 cm posts and is designed around one or two cats of a more standard size. Compact 60 cm models are primarily intended as scratching and resting points rather than high-impact climbing structures for large cats.

That does not make them poor products — simply products designed for a different use case.

Two details that matter after assembly

Recheck the fixings. On larger structures, follow the assembly instructions carefully and periodically make sure screws and pressure fittings remain secure, especially during the first weeks of use.

Choose a stable position. A level floor and a sensible position beside a wall or in a corner can help a tall structure feel more settled in the room. Follow any anchoring or mounting instructions supplied with the product.
